Donald Trump has now reached the stage where he’s trying to distract from his heightening Russia scandal by inventing phony Russia scandals about his political opponents. First Trump called for an investigation into Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer’s ties to Russia. Then he did the same to Democratic House Leader Nancy Pelosi. But it took him three tries on Twitter to figure out how to spell one of the words.

Trump first made an idiotic Twitter post which read “I hear by demand a second investigation, after Schumer, of Pelosi for her close ties to Russia, and lying about it,” seeming to believe that “hereby” was actually two words:

Later, Trump deleted that tweet and replaced it with one which read “I hearby demand a second investigation, after Schumer, of Pelosi for her close ties to Russia, and lying about it,” inventing the new word “hearby” in the process:

Finally, Trump deleted the second attempt and posted a third tweet, by which time someone on his team had apparently explained to him that “hereby” was the word he was looking for:

Each day it seems more apparent that Donald Trump is our first illiterate president. But that embarrassment aside, the larger story here is that Trump is now feeling so much heat over his Russia scandal that he’s moved on from his long string of ‘Russia is fake news’ denials. Instead he’s now falling back to the weaker position of not really trying to deny it, but instead to randomly accuse his opponents of the same thing. But as it turns out, Chuck Schumer got the last laugh today.

Trump demanded an “immediate investigation into Chuck Schumer and his ties to Russia and Putin,” and posted an old photo of Schumer and Putin standing next to each other eating doughnuts at some kind of political function. Schumer responded by pointing out that it occurred back in 2003 and that it took place in full view of the media and the public — as opposed to the Trump’s campaign meetings with the Kremlin, which were in secret and were then repeatedly lied about. Schumer then added the retort “And for the record, they were Krispy Kreme donuts.”
