Donald Trump still silent a day after Russia bombs and kills U.S. backed troops in Syria

Yesterday, Russian military aircraft bombed and killed rebel troops in Syria who had been trained and backed by the United States. Russia is claiming that the bombing was an accident, an excuse the Kremlin regularly employs after taking military action it doesn’t want to take responsibility for. News of the incident is just surfacing today, but it took place a full day ago, and Donald Trump has surely known about it since yesterday. So what’s he had to say about it? Nothing. Not a word.

Nevermind that Russia almost surely bombed the rebel Syrian troops on purpose, because it wants the rebels to fail so its puppet dictator Bashar al-Assad can remain in power. And nevermind that according to this Business Insider report, actual U.S. troops were less than three miles away from the site of the bombing where the U.S.-backed troops were killed. This deadly “accident” by the Russians could easily have cost Americans their lives as well. But none of Russia’s increasingly flimsily veiled military aggression against the United States, or against anyone else, seems to matter to Donald Trump or even land on his radar of priorities.

Trump could have used his first speech to Congress last night to address the incident, even if only to say that he’s taking Russia’s word for it that it was an accident, and that he’s expecting no further such accidents from Russia. He could have given Vladimir Putin deniability, even while sending a clear signal that his military aggression was being put on notice. But instead, Trump said nothing about Russia in his entire speech. It’s as if he wants us to forget that Russia exists, so we’ll stop digging into his Russia scandal. Fat chance of that. Help us investigate the Trump-Russia scandal
