In a deeply disturbing and semi-coherent rant this weekend, Donald Trump accused Alec Baldwin and NBC of “collusion” for daring to parody him on Saturday Night Live. Trump also threatened “retribution” against them both. This was stunning: the President of the United States was threatening to use his position in the government to punish an actor for exercising his constitutional rights.

Donald Trump has faced widespread criticism and condemnation across the board; his tweet alone is enough to impeach and remove him from office. But Alec Baldwin, who has shown no fear while portraying and lampooning Trump on SNL, is predictably taking a bold stand in the name of pushing back against Trump’s unconstitutional threat.

Baldwin tweeted this: “I wonder if a sitting President exhorting his followers that my role in a TV comedy qualifies me as an enemy of the people constitutes a threat to my safety and that of my family?” Baldwin has a point; Trump’s similar rhetoric against the media resulted in one of his supporters violently assaulting a member of the media at a recent Trump rally.

Alec Baldwin isn’t a member of the SNL cast, and in recent months he’s been portraying Donald Trump on a less frequent basis. Now that Trump is threatening his well-being over it, one might expect Baldwin to tackle the SNL role with renewed frequency and aggression. It’s clear he has no intention of allowing the illegitimate “president” to take his rights away.
