Back when Donald Trump first announced his ridiculous campaign for president in extraordinarily racist fashion, only a handful of Republicans in Congress were quick to support him. In what could be coincidence, or karma, or a direct correlation, those specific Republicans are now dropping like flies.

First came the criminal indictment of GOP Congressman Chris Collins last year on financial crimes. Then came the indictment of GOP Congressman Duncan Hunter on campaign finance crimes. These were, remarkably, the first two Republicans in Congress to endorse Donald Trump. Collins and Hunter both decided to run for reelection in their deep red districts, and they both won. But they’re each headed for criminal trial, and based on the publicly available evidence, there is every reason to expect them both to be convicted and sent to prison. That brings us to door number three.

Yesterday, GOP Congressman Tom Marino – who was also an early supporter of Donald Trump – abruptly resigned without warning or explanation. He said he’s taking a job in the private sector. But that makes no sense, considering that he was just sworn in for a new term two weeks ago, and he wouldn’t have gone to all the trouble to get reelected just to turn around and immediately quit.

It’s fair to assume that there are ulterior motives for Marino’s bizarre resignation. Perhaps he’s running from some kind of scandal. Perhaps he’s about to be indicted himself. Or maybe he just figured out that Donald Trump is getting impeached, and since he serves on the House Judiciary Committee where the impeachment process begins, he didn’t want to stick around for it. Either way, Trump’s earliest and biggest supporters in Congress are dropping like flies.
