Donald Trump has walled himself into a corner
Donald Trump has painted himself into a corner on his border wall, hyping it up so much during his campaign that it became a trigger issue for his voting base. Now he needs to deliver the wall to his fans. However, it must have never crossed his mind to consider the many studies done on this issue, or to consider the many alternate points of view on more effective methods of dealing with immigration issues.
Democrats are not arguing that there shouldn’t be a better policy to deal with illegal immigration, they’re arguing that they are not about to spend $5 billion dollars on something that studies show would be ineffective. You aren’t getting the proper bang for your buck. Fiscally responsible people like Schumer and Pelosi have tried to explain this to Trump, but all he can do is adjust his blinders and stammer on.
Trump has proven himself to be an effective dissembler. He does not listen to reason but instead searches for statistics that back up his point of view, regardless of whether they are properly applied to the subject at hand. He’ll fabricate facts if it suits him, but that only works with his base. It is a ridiculous notion to think you can allocate billions of dollars towards a vanity project that’s prime value is “throwing a bone” to Trump’s base, in the words of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
The American people must consider the facts, not the illusions that Trump paints for the public. If you were in upper management and one of your employees came to you with a $5 billion proposal, you would expect that employee to also include an independent analysis of the project. In all likelihood, you would also order another report on your own before deciding if this project is viable. You don’t decide the project is viable, and afterwards “find” facts that support your choice. That would just be backwards.
