Julian Assange’s mother bails on him

Twenty-four hours ago, an errant (or perhaps not so errant) filing from federal prosecutors revealed that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has already been secretly criminally charged. That’s set off a whole lot of debate about what comes next as far as extradition, along with speculation about what Robert Mueller’s prosecutorial allies may have already secretly done in that regard. Now here comes Assange’s mother.

Julian Assange’s mom is named Christine Assange. There is a popular Twitter account claiming to be her, and while it’s not a Twitter-verified account, it’s widely believed that it really is her. This evening, Mrs. Assange tweeted this:

“Dear followers & supporters of my son Julian. Regretfully I am no longer involved in the campaign to free my son or available for comment. Don’t worry, I’m ok. Many thanks to everyone for your all your work, kind wishes & support.”

She then included links to two other Twitter accounts aimed at defending and/or protecting Julian Assange. So it’s clear that she hasn’t turned against her son; instead she’s simply bailing on him. Why? Only she knows. But you can’t overlook the timing here. Last night she learned, along with the rest of us, that Julian has been criminally charged in the United States. Now she’s suddenly stepping out of the picture. What’s going on here? Stay tuned.
