Why Mitch McConnell might suddenly be trying to take Donald Trump down for his own gain

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

In the current political landscape it is sometimes difficult to determine when a Republican member of Congress is acting even more strange than usual. However, some recent statements and actions by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell stand out as extremely odd, particularly given how close we are to the midterm elections. Following his successful attempt at pushing Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination through the Senate in the least transparent process in history, McConnell has repeatedly indicated that Republicans will attack the middle class if they still hold power after the election.

Despite all evidence showing the GOP Tax Scam being the cause for the ballooning deficit, McConnell stated that “entitlements” – Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid – are “the real drivers of the debt” while saying they will need to be changed “to the demographics of the future.” With only weeks until the midterms, McConnell is admitting that if Republicans still hold the House and Senate after the election, they will be coming to take away money that the middle class Americans have been saving up their entire working lives. Why would McConnell make such statements that are sure to incense middle class voters? It’s one thing to plan to do it; it’s another thing to admit it out loud in advance.

A recent article from the Los Angeles Times even asks the question, “Is Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) deliberately trying to throw the election to the Democrats?” At first glance that feels like an absurd question, but given what he has publicly stated, could there be any validity to it? Why would McConnell prefer Democrats take back power? Based on recent polling data from FiveThirtyEight, there is only about a 20% chance of Republicans losing the majority in the Senate, but a greater than 80% chance of Democrats winning the House.

If Mitch McConnell is confident that he will still be Senate Majority Leader, meaning he can continue to push through ultra-conservative judges, McConnell might actually want a Democratic-led House of Representatives to be a check on Donald Trump which will likely lead to impeachment. After passing the tax giveaway to corporations and the top 1%, McConnell might be thinking he has gotten all he can legislatively, and it is no longer worth it to keep Trump around, as his historically low approval rating is hurting the Republican Party. With so many scandals breaking daily, McConnell might want to end the hemorrhaging and put an end to the failed Trump experiment before it takes him down as well.
