GOP Senator Susan Collins gave a lengthy, hostile, extremist, and at times unhinged speech today, spelling out all the dishonest reasons why she’s voting to put mentally unstable alleged serial sexual assaulter Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court. We may never understand why she did it, as it certainly didn’t boost her reelection chances. In fact, serious Democrats are already lining up to run against Collins.

The most prominent name was Susan Rice, the former Obama White House National Security Adviser and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. When CNN contributor Jen Psaki posted a tweet asking who might end up running against Susan Collins in 2020, Rice got a lot of attention when she tweeted “Me.”

After her tweet went viral, Susan Rice qualified her remark: “Many thanks for the encouragement. I’m not making any announcements. Like so many Americans, I am deeply disappointed in Senator Collins’ vote for Kavanaugh. Maine and America deserve better.” This wasn’t necessarily surprising, as the process of entering the race in a statewide election isn’t something that can be done in the span of a tweet. But what stands out here is that when Rice qualified her remarks, she didn’t say anything along the lines of “I’m not going to run.”

Meanwhile, there is already a Democratic candidate officially in the 2020 race for Senator in Maine. Dr. Cat London, who describes herself in her bio as a “Family Medicine Physician, mother to two sons, four rescue dogs, sometime runner,” and has already been mounting a campaign against Susan Collins for months. You can find Cat London on Twitter here.
