Donald Trump has begun writing the epitaph of his presidency

Every presidency has its epitaph. Barack Obama is remembered for notching a series of accomplishments, while representing the nation with class and dignity. Bill Clinton is remembered for having left the nation a lot better than he found it. Then there’s the case of Donald Trump, whose presidency is set to be remembered as illegitimate, disastrous, embarrassing, and a cautionary tale. The few remaining questions are when and how it’ll end. Interestingly, Trump has already begun trying to write his own version of that epitaph.

Donald Trump is historically unpopular, with an approval rating that’s in the thirties and trending further downward. Approval rating alone does not necessarily write the story of a presidency. For instance, Obama and Clinton went through patches of mild unpopularity during their first terms, but became far more popular as more Americans gradually concluded that they were doing a good job. Don’t tell that to Trump, however, because his latest words reveal that he’s not interested in how to try to turn things around.

For instance, Trump posted this tweet last night: “While my (our) poll numbers are good, with the Economy being the best ever, if it weren’t for the Rigged Russian Witch Hunt, they would be 25 points higher! Highly conflicted Bob Mueller & the 17 Angry Democrats are using this Phony issue to hurt us in the Midterms. No Collusion!” Here we find him admitting defeat. He’s floating absurd excuses for why he’s so unpopular, much like a losing sports team that’s already blaming the refs for what it believes will be an eventual loss, when it’s still the second quarter.

Donald Trump seems to know that his presidency has failed and that it’ll be over before too much longer. He’s already trying to assign external blame for the demise. In another tweet last night he even blamed his own Republican Party for the fact that his asinine border wall never got built. Trump will be remembered as a criminal who rigged the election, accomplished nothing, was widely hated, and was ousted. He’s clearly hoping that history will write that he would have been the greatest of all time, if not for everyone sabotaging him. That’s not going to happen.
