After weeks of buildup, today marks the official release of Bob Woodward’s new book about Donald Trump and his White House. Trump’s own people have publicly refuted various claims made in the book, but Woodward says he has tape recordings to back up every word of it. However, one claim made in the book has already been fully vindicated – by Trump’s own mouth.

Woodward’s book says that Donald Trump told his former top economic adviser Gary Cohn to simply “print money” in order to solve the national debt. This would represent a total misunderstanding of how money works, and fundamental ignorance of the negative economic impact of such a move. Is it possible that Trump really said something this stunningly dumb? Cohn keeps insisting in generic terms that the book is a work of fiction, while not bothering to refute any of the specific claims in the book. So let’s take a look at what Trump has had to say about printing money.

Back in May of 2016, while he was running for president, Donald Trump appeared on CNN and said that the national debt will never be a problem “because you print the money.” CNN documented the quote on its website at the time. This is proof that Trump really is so ignorant about economics, he believes the government really can simply print more money to pay off its debt, and it’ll somehow all work out.

Donald Trump and Gary Cohn can throw all the shade they want at Bob Woodward’s book, but when it comes to the claims made about them in the book, Trump’s own public words from the campaign prove that he really does think you can simply print more money and magically fix everything. This guy truly is as stupid as Woodward’s book says he is.
