Last week we officially saw the end of the George Papadopoulos story as it related to the Trump-Russia scandal – or so we thought – when he was sentenced to fourteen days in prison as part of his plea deal. Now, in an odd development that has some legal observers scratching their heads, Papadopoulos has begun spilling his guts about Trump-Russia on his Twitter account. It’s not clear what he’s trying to accomplish, but he appears to be quickly making a mess for himself.

It began eleven hours ago when George Papadopoulos tweeted this: “I introduced candidate Trump to the Egyptian president during the campaign. A president [whose] country I actually had deep connections to, and the campaign accepted. I failed to introduce him to Putin.” Okay, so where was this going? He then added: “Furthermore, to put things in context, even with my real contact in Egypt, it was only AFTER I introduced Trump-Sisi that the Egyptian Ambassador hosted me to congratulate me. On the other hand, Alexander Downer, wanted to meet under incredibly suspicious circumstances.” Aha, so that’s where this was going.

Papadopoulos went on to insist that he has no recollection of ever drunkenly discussing stolen emails with Downer, as has long been widely reported. He also implied that Hillary Clinton was somehow behind it all. Then he made this claim: “I think it’s time Downer is as exposed as Christoper Steele.” We’re not sure what this means. Is Papadopoulos implying that famed former MI6 agent Christoper Steele doesn’t exist, and that Steele was simply made up by Australian political figure Alexander Downer? That’s a disturbingly bizarre claim, and an easily disproven one.

We’re not sure what to make of this. George Papadopoulos has already received a very lenient prison sentence as part of his plea deal. He appears to be risking that with his deranged meltdown tonight. As former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti put it, “That scream you hear in the distance is from the legal team of George Papadopoulos, who has begun offering his thoughts on various subjects related to the Russia investigation on Twitter.” This all comes just hours before Papadopoulos and his wife are scheduled to appear on The View on Tuesday morning.
