Good news for the Blue Wave
With Republican Senators attempting to push through a Supreme Court nomination with unprecedented lack of transparency, they are clearly willing to further upset standard practice and outrage a majority of Americans to put a far-right justice on the highest court of the land. This move to add Brett Kavanaugh – a nominee with the lowest approval rating for a SCOTUS nominee in decades – to the Supreme Court is sure to elate their wealthy corporate donors, but it is upsetting many voters in the process.
Even before the Kavanaugh confirmation hearing began, a new ABC News/Washington Post poll found Democrats enjoying their widest advantage over Republicans in midterm election vote preference since 2006. In the generic House ballot, Democrats now hold a 52-38 percent advantage among registered voters. This 14 point margin is impressive, but when Donald Trump is involved in the questions it gets even better for Democrats, with 60% of voters preferring the next Congress to be controlled by Democrats to be a check on Trump and his policies.
While Trump continues to tweet about being everyone’s “favorite president” and promote polls with extremely low credibility, the legitimate polls show Trump having a stunningly low 36% approval. That approval is so bad it is the lowest for any president heading into their first midterm election since such polling began in 1954. The last time Democrats held such approval ratings was in 2006, when they won 31 seats in the House.
Because midterm elections historically draw fewer voters to the polls, it is extremely promising that 65% of registered voters believe it is more important to vote in November than in previous midterm elections. To break this number down by party affiliation, only 56% who support Trump feel this election is more important, as opposed to 73% of those who disapprove of Trump. In the eight months since January, voters who claim they will definitely vote in the midterm elections have grown from 62% up to 75%. The percentage of these definite voters lean disproportionately to vote Democrats – “up 24 points among blacks since April, up 17 points among 18- to 29-year-olds and up 11 points among Democrats and moderates alike.”
As Republicans continue to do everything to try to advance their policies that only benefit the wealthy, it is likely the gap between those supporting Democrats over Republicans will only increase. With only two months until the most important election of our lives, it is extremely important to ensure everyone does everything they can to make sure that the blue wave sweeps America so that we can save democracy.
