Ivanka Trump steps in it again

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Ivanka Trump hasn’t exactly been having the best week. She and her husband Jared Kushner showed up to John McCain’s funeral after Donald Trump had been banned – and if anyone invited them, no one is willing to admit it. Ivanka appeared to be texting during the memorial service. After someone spread the rumor that Senator Lindsey Graham invited them, he publicly insisted that he did not. Today, Ivanka has found a whole different kind of trouble to get into.

Even as Donald Trump was busy spending his Labor Day attacking the leader of a popular labor union, Ivanka Trump took a different approach. First she tweeted this, which seemed okay: “On Labor Day we honor the American worker, past and present, who built our great country and celebrate the many accomplishments of the people (a record 156 million!!) who make up today’s American workforce!” But then five hours later, she added this: “Today, on Labor Day, let’s also recognize the amazing stay-at-home parents across America, who seldom receive the credit they deserve for the invaluable work that they do, as they nurture and raise the next generation of American workers! Thank you!”

No one is going to dispute that stay-at-home parents have a hard job to do; raising kids can be as challenging and time consuming as any “day job.” If this message were coming from someone else, it might not have been seen as controversial. But it was coming from Ivanka Trump, who has grown up wealthy since birth, and had a choice of whether to be a stay-at-home parent. Many parents in low-income situations don’t have that choice. They have to work in order to make ends meet, and they have to work around their job while raising their kids. It’s not something that someone like Ivanka would understand.

Not surprisingly, many of the responses to Ivanka Trump’s tweet were less than appreciative. One such person replied “You are soooo out of touch you may as well live on the moon.” Ivanka was seen as flaunting the fact that she had the choice of whether or not to be a working parent, as part of her life of privilege. The more she tries to normalize herself in the wake of her father’s self destruction, the more she exposes herself as being immune to reality.
