The free press strikes back against Donald Trump

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

America is a great nation for a multitude of reasons. Our Constitution, composed by the founding fathers, created a country different from all others of the time. By putting the power into the hands of the people, the authors believed that the country would continue to thrive without the type of interference or problems they had been facing under the British monarchy. This plan has succeeded for generations, thanks to the foresight of those who realized escaping the dictatorship of a king was necessary for all to be free.

The First Amendment to the Constitution allows for the freedom of religion, speech, assembly, and the press. This paramount amendment allowed for the creation of a free press, ensuring that indidvuals could not be prosecuted for reporting on the misdeeds of those in power. While a free press has, over the years, led to the discovery of corruption among many politicians, this nation has not escaped those attacking the First Amendment. Donald Trump attacks and threats against the media has drawn comparisons to Richard Nixon.

After nearly two years of Trump’s attacks on the media, it appears that they have decided to fight back. A newspaper in Boston is proposing to coordinate an editorial response, including publications across the country, to defend against Trump’s attack on the first amendment. Despite Trump’s incessant attacks, including his claims that a free press is the enemy of the people, Marjorie Pritchard, deputy managing editor for the Boston Globe’s editorial pages, says “We are not the enemy of the people.”

With Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Donald Trump’s role in the Trump-Russia treason, many in the media are preparing for a fight. The Boston Globe has reached out to multiple editorial boards across the country to write stories denouncing what the paper calls a “dirty war against the free press.” As Palmer Report has documented, Trump and his legal team believe that they can win over public opinion by putting out lies and propaganda in order to muddy the national conversation and beliefs. Thankfully, Robert Mueller only cares about facts and not the lies Trump and Giuliani are pushing on a daily basis.
