Rudy Giuliani’s plan falls apart

Two and a half months ago, Rudy Giuliani announced he was joining Donald Trump’s legal team, and he publicly promised that he had a plan for making the Trump-Russia investigation go away within a week or two. We now know for certain what was fairly obvious back then: either there was no plan, or it was such a terrible plan that it went nowhere. Now Rudy has a new problem, and yesterday it began to catch up with him.

Last week Palmer Report pointed out that Rudy Giuliani had gone deafeningly silent after the Department of Justice Inspector General dropped a strong hint that Rudy was under criminal investigation. Suddenly Rudy went from running his mouth about Trump-Russia on television every few days, to all but vanishing. It wasn’t difficult to understand why. Now that Rudy knew for certain he was under investigation, if he kept trying to sabotage the investigation, he could face obstruction of justice charges on top of whatever else he’s facing.

So now Giuliani has gone quiet, and instead he appears to be focused on one last big foreign agent score before he can be indicted. We previously saw Paul Manafort use a similar tactic to try to build a war chest for his legal bills, right after he learned he was going to be indicted. But now Rudy has another problem.

Back when Rudy Giuliani was boldly making prognostications and demands in the Trump-Russia investigation, he was writing checks he knew he couldn’t cash. For instance, three weeks ago he appeared on television and announced that Donald Trump would decide on July 4th whether Donald Trump will voluntarily grant an interview to Robert Mueller. Of course that deadline came and went yesterday. CBS News asked Rudy to comment on what happened, and all he could muster up was that “no decision” had been made. Rudy is now desperately trying to stay out of this, yet his own prior words keep dragging him back in. Some plan, Rudy.
