White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer probably didn’t help his boss’s cause today when he held a press conference and announced that the protests and lack of support for Donald Trump have been “frustrating” and “demoralizing” for Trump and his administration. It was a bizarre admission regarding a historically unpopular president who is already viewed as being too fragile and whiny in the eyes of Americans.

Spicer blamed everything from the poor crowd size at Trump’s inauguration, to the media’s accurate reporting on the poor crowd size, to a seeming tacit reference to the massive number of Women’s March protesters who turned out against Trump. “It’s unbelievably frustrating when you’re continually told it’s not big enough; it’s not good enough,” he complained during his press conference today, adding “You can’t win.” But then he delivered what may have been the money quote: “The default narrative is always negative, and it’s demoralizing,” Spicer said.

In other words, the negative sentiment toward Donald Trump and his administration are not the fault of Trump or his intentionally divisive policies or his mounting scandals or his abhorrent behavior. It’s somehow the fault of everyone else. Someone might want to teach Sean Spicer how public relations works.
