Robert de Niro just used the Tony Awards to say what we’re all thinking about Donald Trump
Tonight’s Tony Awards were an enjoyable spectacle with a number of meaningful and engaging moments – but they’ll be remembered for one thing. Actually, two things. More specifically, two words. Acting legend Robert de Niro took the stage during the awards ceremony and yelled something about Donald Trump that was promptly bleeped out. Then he got a standing ovation. Then he yelled it again.
Here’s what Robert de Niro said when he first walked out on stage: “I’m going to say one thing: Fuck Trump.” He then received a standing ovation that lasted roughly thirty seconds, and appeared to have been the longest of the evening. Then, just to make sure his point got across, he said it again: “It’s no longer Down With Trump, it’s Fuck Trump.”
His message was so thoroughly censored that many viewers were left confused about what happened, and took to social media to ask what they missed. We’ve managed to find a live feed that wasn’t censored, if you want to watch for yourself:
It’s worth noting that Robert de Niro has recently begun portraying Special Counsel Robert Mueller on Saturday Night Live. Mueller just so happens to be the federal prosecutor primarily in charge of making Donald Trump answer for his numerous crimes. In real life, de Niro has consistently spoken out against Trump and his antics. After Trump was a national embarrassment for the United States at this week’s G7 summit, de Niro said tonight what we were all thinking.
