Yesterday afternoon the House Judiciary Committee used a court filing to open a low-key yet nonetheless potentially potent impeachment inquiry into Donald Trump. We all knew that Trump would respond in horrible fashion, either because he was frustrated, or he wanted to create a distraction, or both. But even we didn’t know Trump would take things quite this far.

The House Judiciary Committee is led by Chairman Jerry Nadler, but he’s a white guy, and Donald Trump’s wheelhouse is hurling racist insults at black public figures. So Trump bypassed Nadler and instead went after House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings. More specifically, Trump attacked Cummings’ hometown of Baltimore.

Donald Trump insisted that Elijah Cummings’ district in Baltimore is “FAR WORSE and more dangerous” than Trump’s immigrant concentration camps on the border. Trump also claimed that Cummings’ district is the “Worst in the USA” and a “rat and rodent infested mess” and a “filthy place.” Then Trump randomly claimed that Cummings’ district is somehow stealing money, and that it should be investigated.

The message couldn’t have been more clear: Donald Trump is a racist whose remaining supporters are racists, and he’s trying to fire them up with this racist meltdown, while distracting the media from the fact that the impeachment process just began against him. But Trump is in danger of taking his racism so psychotically far, he chases away moderate-conservative voters in the process. Trump might as well just resign before this gets even uglier for him.
