It’s almost impossible to overstate how crucial the Georgia senate runoffs in January are to the future of the country, being the surest possible way to begin overturning much of the damage Donald Trump has done over the last four years. That’s why it’s pertinent that Democrats do everything they can to help get Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock elected.

It’s also hardly surprising that Donald Trump isn’t doing a whole lot to help out the Republican candidates currently occupying those seats since there’s nothing really in it for him as a lame-duck president. He’s not only reluctant to go to Georgia to campaign for David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, but during his farce of a press conference on Thursday he openly called on Republicans to boycott the runoffs and insulted the state’s Republican administration.

There could be another reason why he doesn’t want to talk about Georgia, apart from the state voting against him. When Mark Esper was abruptly replaced with Christopher Miller, the Air Force made preparations to put a new fleet of cargo planes in Georgia and Perdue applauded this announcement on Tuesday, as he will likely try to make credit for the move. The Trump administration is already feeling pushback questioning the timing of Miller’s move – and Perdue may yet find himself in another scandal that involves him with the Trump administration.

It’s also possible that we may have gotten our answer for the sudden shakeup of the Defense Department following the election – that these new placements were there to do the corrupt bidding of Trump and his fellow Republicans. This could be a lose-lose for Perdue even if he’s re-elected, but it’s better to keep that from happening in the first place – doing everything we can to elect Jon Ossoff in his place on Jan 5.
