Over the past year and a half we’ve seen formerly respected Republican Senator Lindsey Graham destroy his reputation by turning himself into a cartoonish Donald Trump cheerleader. In the process, Graham has come off as more unstable and incoherent by the day, raising questions about whether Trump was making a wise move by counting on help from someone so deeply troubled. Today, things seemingly came to a head.

Lindsey Graham is now a full blown Donald Trump cheerleader, but he used to be a full blown John McCain cheerleader. McCain always took a militaristic hard line toward Iran, whereas Trump’s approach to Iran has come off as self-contradicting gibberish. Various news outlets are reporting that Trump can’t make up his mind between provocatively blaming Iran (without evidence) for the Saudi Arabia attack, or instead trying to cut a peace deal with Iran in the hope of boosting his own dying poll numbers.

That led Lindsey Graham to post this tweet today: “The measured response by President Donald Trump regarding the shooting down of an American drone was clearly seen by the Iranian regime as a sign of weakness.” The tweet was part of a longer thread, and wasn’t actually a criticism of Trump. But Trump – who isn’t exactly one for details – appeared to have come across the tweet out of context, and responded in kind.

Donald Trump responded to Lindsey Graham’s tweet with these words: “No Lindsey, it was a sign of strength that some people just don’t understand!” Wait, what? Now Trump is engaged in some kind of weird Twitter feud with his friend Graham, for no apparent reason. Trump’s behavior is becoming more erratic, vacant, and confused by the day. This is yet another example.
