Donald Trump’s Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney just stood up at a press conference and flat out confessed that Donald Trump urged Ukraine to help him promote fake scandals about his adversaries, and “that’s why we held up the money.” It was one of the dumbest things anyone has said yet in this scandal, and the history books will look back at it as a turning point in Trump’s downfall. Here’s the thing, though: Trump loved it.

To give you an idea of how obviously bad Mick Mulvaney’s confession was today, everyone from Trump’s Department of Justice to Trump’s own personal attorney have all quickly sought to publicly distance themselves from what just happened. It’s easy to understand why everyone on Team Trump sees it as such a bad thing: Mulvaney just sent himself, Donald Trump, and a bunch of other people to prison. Well, not quite everyone.

The Washington Post delivered this rich detail in one of its live updates today: “One person who spoke to Trump said, however, that he was pleased with Mulvaney’s performance.” That’s right, Donald Trump thinks Mulvaney just did something great. Which probably means Trump told Mulvaney to go out there and say it to begin with.

Just because Donald Trump appears to have been behind Mick Mulvaney’s confession, don’t mistake this for some kind of clever or cunning move. It is one of the dumbest and most self defeating things in the history of presidential politics, and it sped up the clock on Trump’s ouster. All this does is prove that Trump is so far gone mentally and psychologically, he thought this was a good idea. Trump may finish himself off before impeachment can take him down.
