Andrew Gillum slam dunks Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis
Last night the Democrats chose Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum as their nominee for Governor of Florida, while the Republicans chose Donald Trump lackey Ron DeSantis as their nominee. This of course prompted Trump to jump on Twitter this morning and say something stupid and untrue, just as DeSantis was saying something blatantly racist. Gillum wasted no time slam dunking them both for it.
This morning Donald Trump posted this tweet: “Not only did Congressman Ron DeSantis easily win the Republican Primary, but his opponent in November is his biggest dream….a failed Socialist Mayor named Andrew Gillum who has allowed crime & many other problems to flourish in his city. This is not what Florida wants or needs!” Of course Trump is flat out lying about Gillum being a socialist, and whenever Trump refers to “crime” it’s a racist dog whistle. But Gillum wasn’t having any of it.
Andrew Gillum quoted Trump’s rant and added his own response: “What our state and country needs is decency, hope, and leadership. If you agree, join us at AndrewGillum.com” – but then came the real fireworks. Ron DeSantis, who is obviously a racist or he wouldn’t have been endorsed by Trump, decided to go on national television and show just how racist he could be. DeSantis said this about Gillum, who is African-American: “The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up.”
This was such a blatantly racist remark on the part of Ron DeSantis, even some Fox News hosts ended up calling for him to apologize. Andrew Gillum then slammed DeSantis, stating this for the cameras: “I believe that Florida and its rich diversity are going to be looking for a governor who’s going to bring us together. Not divide us. Not misogynists. Not racists.” As the day has gone on, Gillum has gained tens of thousands of new followers on Twitter.
